Sermon: The Boldness of the Righteous!

The Boldness of the Righteous.
The Boldness of the Righteous.

Proverbs 28:1 states, “The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.” This verse contrasts two types of people: the wicked and the righteous. It highlights the inner turmoil of the wicked, who live in fear and guilt, and the confidence of the righteous, who stand firm in their integrity. In today’s message, we will explore the significance of this verse in our daily walk with God, focusing on three key subtopics: the fear of the wicked, the boldness of the righteous, and the source of this boldness.

The Fear of the Wicked

Proverbs 28:1a - "The wicked flee when no one pursues..."

The first part of the verse paints a vivid picture of the wicked living in a constant state of fear and anxiety. Their guilt and unrighteousness make them paranoid, always expecting retribution for their deeds. Even when no one is after them, their conscience drives them to flee, reflecting their inner turmoil.

Leviticus 26:36 - "And as for those of you who are left, I will send faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies. The sound of a driven leaf shall put them to flight, and they shall flee as one flees from the sword, and they shall fall when none pursues."
Isaiah 57:20-21 - "But the wicked are like the tossing sea, for it cannot be quiet, and its waters toss up mire and dirt. There is no peace, says my God, for the wicked."

Example:

Consider someone who has committed a serious crime. Even if they aren’t caught immediately, they live in constant fear of being discovered. Every unexpected knock on the door, every unfamiliar face on the street, stirs up anxiety and dread within them. This is the kind of fear that the wicked experience, always looking over their shoulder, unable to find peace.

The Boldness of the Righteous

Key Scripture: Proverbs 28:1b - "...but the righteous are bold as a lion."

In stark contrast to the wicked, the righteous have a profound sense of peace and boldness. This boldness is not arrogance but a confidence rooted in their relationship with God. The righteous live with integrity, and their clear conscience allows them to face challenges head-on, without fear of retribution or exposure. This lion-like boldness reflects their trust in God’s protection and justice.

Psalm 27:1 - "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"
Proverbs 14:26 - "In the fear of the Lord one has strong confidence, and his children will have a refuge."
Romans 8:31 - "What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?"

Example:

Think of a child who knows they have done nothing wrong. Even if an adult accuses them unfairly, they stand their ground, calmly and confidently explaining their actions. Their innocence gives them a boldness that even adults can recognize. Similarly, the righteous, knowing they have walked in God’s ways, can face any challenge or accusation with unshakable confidence.

The Source of Righteous Boldness

Key Scripture: Proverbs 28:1b - "...but the righteous are bold as a lion."

The boldness of the righteous is not self-generated; it comes from their relationship with God. This boldness is grounded in a life lived according to God’s principles, guided by the Holy Spirit, and rooted in faith. The righteous trust in God's promises and His justice, which empowers them to act with courage and assurance in all circumstances.

Isaiah 40:31 - "But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."
2 Timothy 1:7 - "For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control."
Psalm 112:7-8 - "He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord. His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries."

Example:

Consider the story of David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17). David, a young shepherd, faced the giant Goliath with boldness, not because of his own strength but because he trusted in the Lord. His confidence came from knowing that God was with him, just as God is with the righteous today. This is the kind of boldness that allows believers to stand firm, even in the face of overwhelming odds.

Conclusion:

Proverbs 28:1 offers a powerful reminder of the contrast between the wicked and the righteous. The wicked, burdened by guilt, live in constant fear, while the righteous, upheld by their integrity and faith, are as bold as lions. As we strive to live righteously, let us draw near to God, allowing His Spirit to fill us with the boldness that comes from a clear conscience and unwavering trust in His promises. May we live in such a way that our boldness becomes a testimony of God’s power and presence in our lives.

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the truth of Your Word that guides us and strengthens us. As we reflect on Proverbs 28:1, we ask that You instill in us the boldness of the righteous. Help us to walk in integrity, rooted in Your love and guided by Your Spirit. Remove any fear or anxiety from our hearts, and replace it with the confidence that comes from knowing You are with us. May our lives be a reflection of Your light, and may we stand firm in faith, boldly proclaiming Your goodness. We pray this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
